After Some Shower

There never was a time like this

so ripe in wanting

aching respite

A world primed for new

but only expectation

The door opened once

a century ago or so ago

A sliver enough to let in

some forgotten way to see

If they tell us that it's finished

over

we believe them smiling

but oh

oh

How soon we forget

that misers count coins in degrees

the tellers smoke words through their teeth

and the machine churns out thank you's

I haven't forgotten,

how many have?
